FAMILY SPONSORSHIP

Immigrants who wish to come to Canada through Family Sponsorship are eligible if they have a close relative who is either a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, and who will consent to sponsor them.

Close relatives include the following:

spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner
parents
grandparents
brothers or sisters, nephews or nieces, granddaughters or grandsons who are
orphaned, under 18 years of age, and not married or in a common-law relationship
another relative of any age or relationship, but only under specific conditions (see note below)
accompanying relatives of the above

The sponsor must promise to support the immigrant (and accompanying relatives) financially, and to provide for all their essential needs if necessary. Quebec residents must sign an “undertaking” with the province of Quebec, which is a contract binding the sponsorship.

Note: Note: You can sponsor one relative regardless of age or relationship only if you do not have a living spouse or common-law partner, conjugal partner, a son or daughter, parent, grandparent, sibling, uncle, aunt, nephew or niece who could be sponsored as a member of the family class, and you do not have any relative who is a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident or registered as an Indian under the Indian Act.

Application timelines

There is a two-step process involved in family class applications: the assessment of the sponsorship application in Canada and the assessment of the permanent residence application outside Canada by the visa office. There are separate processing times for each of these two steps.

Remember, Immigration Canada requires a large number of documents and references as proof of your relations and any missing data on your application will delay the processing and extend the time spent apart with your dear ones.
